With Windows Vista, the WinSxS folder was able to be cleaned up via a third party tool (WinSxS Lite here – Vista only!). With the initial release of Windows 7, we lost that capability – but it has since returned with Service Pack 1.

If you are a developer using ASP.NET, one of the first things you’ll want to install on Windows 7 or Vista is IIS (internet information server). Keep in mind that your version of Windows may not come with IIS. I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate edition.

One way to safely disconnect a USB connected hardware is to use the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ option which appears on the system tray whenever a USB storage drive is connected to the machine. Another way is to use software that lets you manage USB devices such as the recently mentioned DevEject. For most cases, the little icon on the system tray is enough but if your find its location inconvenient, you can add this option to the desktop context menu. Here is how.
